Minutes: 12 May 2011
Minutes - Les Guidry d'Asteur Meeting - 12 May 2011
Bonjour Cousins,
Our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Reunion is coming together well at this point. The Reunion will be on Saturday, 8 October 2011 from approximately 9 am until about 4 pm at the Cut Off Youth Center in Cut Off, LA on the banks of Bayou Lafourche. We are planning to have a special family Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church about 8 am. The Church is within 100 yards of the Cut Off Youth Center.
Our agenda is almost complete at this time. In no specific order here is what we have confirmed so far:
* Nonc Jules Guidry & Mary Lou Guidry & the Lachez-Les Cajun Music Band with Roland Cheramie on fiddle and Elaine Clement on triangle. They'll entertain us with some lively Cajun music and perhaps a bit of Cajun culture.

http://louisianafolklife.nsula.edu/artist-biographies/profiles/98
http://www.bayouvermilion.org/index.cfm?load=page&page=111
* Sandra (Petitpas) Perro will present a very interesting photographic essay of Acadian sites in Nova Scotia associated with the Petitpas family
* Ron "Black" Guidry will discuss Cajun culture in the bayou and marsh country, tell a couple of stories, provide an overview of his famous Cajun Man's Swamp Cruise and play us a few Cajun songs on the accordion. Many of you may remember Black Guidry from his Canadian Kia commercials. http://www.cajunman.com/
I am working on one or two other presentations; however, this year we will have more time set aside for folks to get to meet each other and discuss their common interests.
In addition, we will have a number of displays for everyone to view and enjoy. Here's what we are working on at this time:
* Model boats of the Bayou Lafourche area carved by a gentleman with the surname Guidry
* Additional model boats and wonderful paintings by another Guidry
* A poster display on the "Migration of the Guédry family from 1755-1800"
* A tribute to military veterans within the Guédry family
* A lovely reconstructed map of historic Golden Meadow, LA on Bayou Lafourche. Golden Meadow is a haven for the Guidry family of south LA.
* Flags flown by the fishing vessels of Bayou Lafourche to identify their owners
* An award-winniing genealogical display on the Guidry family developed by a young student from LaRose, LA
And there will be others that we'll announce later.
We are planning to have several tables where Guédry vendors can display their products for sale and can provide brochures on their businesses. And we'll have our own Sales Table with items related to our family.
Lunch will be prepared by a couple of chefs extraordinaire from our family. Not sure what we will have yet, but it will be an outstanding Cajun meal. And there will be hot dogs and hamburgers for the children. (Lunch will be provided at an extra charge for those that want to eat at the Youth Center.)
We may even have a magician from the family visiting us during the breaks and at lunch.
Finally we are working on a late afternoon tour (starting about 4 pm) to Fourchon, Cheniere Caminade and Grand Isle to highlight the world class port facility at Fourchon, see the impact of the hurricanes and BP Oil Spill and discuss the Guidry family that lived in these marshes during the late 1800's.
I am also organizing two other events for our family during the week.
On 10 October 2011 we will have a Cajun Swamp Cruise with Black Guidry. The cost will be $25/person. We have reserved the tour boat that accommodates 45 people. Individuals will be responsible for getting to the cruise dock which is about 15 miles west of Houma, LA on LA Highway 182. I will provide directions and distance/time. The time of the cruise is not set yet. The cruise will last approximately two hours and you'll not only see alligators, but also see and hear about the wildlife and flowers of a Louisiana swamp and marsh. And you'll get to sit back and relax to the stories and music of Black Guidry.
On 14 October 2011 we will have an Historic Acadian Tour that will last all day. The tour will be limited to 24 persons due to the size of the facilities we will visit. We will leave from Lafayette, LA by bus. Stops confirmed thus far include: (1) a rare tour of the old St. Gabriel Catholic Church in St. Gabriel, LA. This church was built by the Acadians in 1776 and is approximately 73% original. It is the oldest religious structure in the Mississippi Valley. Although the exterior of the church can be seen at any time, the church is no longer used and thus locked. It is maintained by the congregation of the new St. Gabriel Church. We will be able to go inside the old church and will hear a presentation by the church historians on the history and architecture of the church. (2) a unique opportunity to view and use the historic St-Charles-aux-Mines Catholic Church records of 1707-1748. When the Acadians were exiled from Grand-Pre, Acadia in late 1755, they were able to take some of their church records with them. Amazingly, three volumes of these records survived not only the initial deportation, but over ten years of exile in Maryland and the voyage and resettlement in Louisiana. For almost two hundred years the records were kept in little St. Gabriel Catholic Church. In the mid-1900's they were moved to the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge Archives in Baton Rouge, LA. This will be only the third time that they have been made available to the public. (3) We'll pass by and view the vast vacherie (cattle ranch) lands of Pierre Guédry - an exiled Acadian who came to LA in 1768 with nothing, suffered tragedy after tragedy in his life, but managed to acquire a fortune as a cattle rancher by the time of his death in 1825. (4) We will stop at a fine Cajun seafood restaurant for lunch. (The cost of lunch will be at one's own expense.) In addition to the above, I am trying to get permission to view the oldest known Guédry home in Louisiana. It was built in the late 1790's and has a very interesting and unique history. During the tour we will ride through 18 miles of the Atchafalaya Swamp - the largest remaining swamp in the United States. The cost of the Historic Acadian Tour has not been set yet, but will be in the range of $60-90/person depending on the cost of the bus rental.
I have attached a Registration Form for the Reunion. Please register early if you can as it will help us plan the lunch and other activities associated with the Reunion.
Additionally, I have started a list for those persons wanting to take one or both tours. Please email me your name at guidryrmartin@gmail.com and tell me what tour you would like to take. I will send cost and other information out as soon as I have finalized everything for the tour. I will then ask that you send payment for the tour.
If you emailed me previously that you wanted to be on one of the tours and I acknowledged your request by return email, you do not need to send me another email.
L'ORDRE DU BON TEMPS
For those wanting to share in an unique opportunity, the Acadian Memorial will have their annual L'Ordre du Bon Temps supper from 7-10 pm on 13 October in Cade, LA - just outside Lafayette. The L'Ordre du Bon Temps is the oldest supper club in North American - begun in 1606 by Champlain at Port Royal, Acadia. The Acadian Memorial models their L'Ordre du Bon Temps supper after that of Port-Royal with a Louisiana twist. There will be Acadians and Native Americans dressed in period costume, superb food by outstanding Cajun chefs and entertainment. The cost is $50/person for the evening. If you are interested in attending, please email me at guidryrmartin@gmail.com and I'll put your name on the Acadian Memorial attendee list for tickets.
GRAND RÉVEIL ACADIEN 2011
FFrom 7 October - 16 October 2011 in South Louisiana will be the Grand Revéil Acadien 2011 (The Great Acadian Awakening 2011). There will be many events occurring in New Orleans (7 Oct), Houma (9 Oct), Lake Charles (11 Oct) and Lafayette (13-16 Oct). Our Guédry family activities are set for the off-days of the Grand Réveil Acadien 2011. The tentative schedule of activities for this 15-day Acadian festival is at http://gra2011.org/ . The schedule is in French and English. Be sure and note the activities on 13 October at the CajunDome in Lafayette. Dr. Stephen White of the Center for Acadian Studies in Moncton, New Brunswick will be a featured speaker.
