Family Genealogy / Généalogie de Famille

The Les Guidry d'Asteur Genealogy Committee maintains an extensive online database documenting the Guédry, Labine, and Petitpas families from their earliest known roots in 17th-century Acadia to the present day. The database traces the descendants of our ancestral couple, Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas, providing documented genealogical information, historical records, photographs, and primary source documents for thousands of family members across multiple generations.

What's in the Database?

The Guédry-Labine Genealogical Database contains two types of pages:

  • Family Web Cards - Three-generation family views showing parents, the subject couple, and their children
  • Person Sheets - Detailed individual profiles with genealogical data, notes, source citations, document images, and name variations

All information includes references to original sources. The database also contains digitized copies of church records, census documents, marriage certificates, and family photographs.

How to Navigate the Database

Getting Started: Visit the Guédry-Labine Genealogical Database and follow these steps:

  1. Click "Surnames" at the top of the page
  2. Select your surname of interest (e.g., GUÉDRY, LABINE, PETITPAS, GEDDRY, JEDREY, GUIDRY)
  3. Click the name of the individual you want to view (e.g., Claude Guédry)

Using Family Web Cards: When a Family Web Card appears, you'll see three generations: parents at the top, the subject couple in the center, and their children at the bottom. Blue names are clickable links to additional information. If a name is not blue, no additional data has been entered yet.

  • Click a parent's name to move up one generation
  • Click a child's name to move down one generation
  • Click the husband or wife's name in the center to view their detailed Person Sheet
  • Multiple spouses are listed below the center block - click the spouse number to view that family unit

Viewing Person Sheets: Person Sheets contain comprehensive information about an individual. Use the scroll bar to navigate through all the data. To view reference sources for any information, double-click the superscript number(s) next to the specific data point.

Accessing Documents & Photos: Look for small camera icons next to names or marriages. Clicking the camera icon opens a page with historical photographs and documents. Use the panel at the bottom center of documents to zoom, print, or copy.

Research Tips

When researching your Guédry, Labine, or Petitpas ancestry, keep these points in mind:

  • Name Variations: The Guédry surname has numerous spelling variations including Guidry, Geddry, Jedrey, Jeddry, Gaidry, Geudry, and more. See our article on name variations for more information.
  • Dit Names: Many ancestors used "dit" (meaning "called" or "known as") names such as Guédry dit Laverdure, Guédry dit Grivois, and Guédry dit Labine. These designations helped distinguish different family branches.
  • Geographic Dispersal: Following the Acadian Deportation of 1755, family members scattered across North America and Europe. Check multiple regions when tracing your line.
  • Church Records: Many genealogical records come from Catholic church registers. Our Extant Acadian Records series details surviving church records and their locations.

Contributing Information

The database continues to grow with contributions from family researchers worldwide. If you have additional information, corrections, photographs, or documents to share, please contact Marty Guidry. Your contributions help preserve our family history for future generations.
