Meeting: 26 January 2002
January 26, 2002 Meeting
Hi folks -
It's time to begin planning for the 2004 Guidry Reunion in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
A kick-off planning meeting was held on Saturday, 26 January 2002 from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon in Lafayette, La. at the CODOFIL offices (217 W. Main Street in Lafayette). Ms. Elaine Clements, CODOFIL Staff Member, was host for the meeting since she has Guidry ancestry in her blood line.
A group of about 10 ardent supporters of the "Guidrys d'Asteur" discussed plans for reestablishing their family organization. Members from the CMA 1999 were present as was new prospective members from around the area including Lafayette, Jennings, Baton Rouge and the Houma/Thibodeaux area.
The discussions was mostly centered on the ways to implement a reunion in Nova Scotia in 2004, especially with so few Guidry families in that area. The suggestion was made to enlist the Petitpas families there to join with the Guidry families in putting on such a reunion.
A member of CAFA was there with ideas that worked for other families in the past, such as a core group of 5 or 6 members being appointed as chairpersons for committees on Genealogy, Membership, Sales, Tours, Lodging, etc. and each of these chairpersons would appoint someone who could work closely with them on their individual committee. The membership dues structure will be worked out in the next few weeks, with an eye to helping the founding group in Nova Scotia with their plans.
Different areas of Nova Scotia were suggested as the intended reunion site, and that also will be determined at a later date. The idea being that the members from Nova Scotia would be in a better position to scout the area and decide on the site, though Lunenburg is presently being highly considered as that was the area that the first Guidrys resided upon arrival in "Acadie."
It was suggested that the area newspapers in Nova Scotia and Maine be contacted to run articles about the planned reunion, since many possible members are from the New England States and travel would not be such a hardship.
The reunions will be held during the last week of July through the 15th of August, 2004 and will encompass most of the western part of Nova Scotia by one family or another.
