Minutes - Les Guidry d'Asteur Meeting - 28 January 2009

January 28, 2009

Bonjour Mes Cousins,

A large group of Guidrys packed the meeting room at the South Lafourche Parish Library in Galliano for the Les Guidry d'Asteur meeting on January 24, 2009.

Marty Guidry welcomed everyone and discussed the origins and purpose of Les Guidry d'Asteur. Les Guidry d'Asteur was founded in 1998 to organize the 1999 Guidry Family Reunion in Houma, LA as part of the Congrès Mondial Acadien. Since that time, it serves to bring together all Guedry's worldwide and to provide an avenue for sharing historical and genealogical information about the Guedry family. The name "Guedry" and "Guidry" includes all spelling variations of our family surname as well as our maternal family the Petitpas.

In a superb presentation Velton Guidry of Galliano, LA discussed the origins of the several lines of Guidrys from lower Bayou Lafourche. Throughout his discussion were interesting family stories and unique tidbits of information. Velton has spent his life researching the Guidry family within the geographical confines of lower Bayou Lafourche. Pens were busily writing as Velton moved from one Guidry line to another during his presentation.

Our Membership report showed that currently we have members from thirteen states (AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, LA, MA, MI, MN, MS, TX, VA, VT) and four Canadian provinces (British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec). A quick check on the internet confirms that we have at least one Guedry family in every state of the United States and most of the Canadian provinces. Wouldn't it be nice to have that distribution as members of Les Guidry d'Asteur?

With 2009 now here it is time to renew your membership in Les Guidry d'Asteur. Our dues are very low ($6 for individuals and $10 for a family). Dues are the primary income source for Les Guidry d'Asteur. All of our funds are used to provide resources for our family as Guedry family gatherings and aiding and encouraging research into the Guedry family history and genealogy. These activities include family reunions, purchasing and placing Guedry genealogy books in key libraries in the U.S. and Canada, publishing a Guedry Family Cookbook, erecting historical markers at Lunenburg and St. Alphonse and developing a Guedry Family Crest. (Remember if you register for the 2009 Guedry Reunion at Bathurst, your registration fee includes your 2009 dues.)

A Membership Application is available at this link for those wishing to mail in their dues: Membership

Treasurer Chuck Guidry reported that Les Guidry d'Asteur has approximately $2700 in the bank. Most of these funds will be used for the upcoming Guedry Reunion in Bathurst.

The Guedry Reunion will be Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Danny's Inn in Bathurst, New Brunswick. We will have a full day of activities beginning with an opening Mass at Holy Family Church in Bathurst at 8:30 am. After Mass we will reunite at Danny's Inn at 10:00 am for a day of music, historical, cultural and genealogical presentations, dinner buffet, displays on the Guedry and Petitpas families and plenty of time to meet your cousins. We will end the Reunion about 4:30 pm with a unique closing ceremony. The registration fee for the Guedry Reunion is $20 for an individual and $40 for a family. The dinner buffet at noon is extra (cost will be approximately $25 per person and is optional)

These two website links provide information on the Guedry Reunion, on activities of the Congrès Mondial, on airports near Bathurst and on accomodations near Bathurst and the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick.

Allie Guidry plans to publish a new edition of our newsletter "Generations" in February 2009. It will be filled with interesting articles and tidbits including a discussion of Guidrys (Guildry, Labine) who served as voyageurs for the Canadian trading companies in the late 1700's, recent research on Guedry's who were deported from Halifax to North Carolina in late 1755, a biographical sketch of an influential Louisiana Guidry and much more.

Becky Boggess continues to update and enhance the Guedry-Labine Family Website. When you have a few moments, surf over to it and peruse the many interesting articles, all prior newsletters and a wealth of information on our Guedry and Petitpas families. It can be found at this link:

The meeting closed after a brief question and answer session on varous aspects of researching the history and genealogy of the Guedry family.

We are always seeking articles for our newsletter "Generations". Every line of the Guedry and Petitpas families has an interesting history with many unique tales. Please consider writing an article about some aspect of your Guedry or Petitpas line. Perhaps you have an interesting story about a grandparent or an uncle in your family. Or perhaps you have a recent research discovery on our family to share with everyone. We would all like to hear it. Length or brevity does not matter. If you would like us to edit the article for readability, we'll be happy to do that. Send your article to our newsletter editor Allie Guidry at txguidry2000@yahoo.com or myself at guidryrmartin@gmail.com.

Thanks,

Marty
