Origins of the Guidry* Family in Louisiana, 1765-1785 (Update 2)

In two earlier issues of "Generations" ( Winter 2007, Volume 5, Issue 1 & Summer 2007, Volume 5, Issue 2 ) we developed a Table identifying the first Guédry families** to settle in Louisiana. In the Amended Table published in Volume 5, Issue 2, Paul LeBlanc, a Les Guédry d'Asteur member from Gonzales, LA, and I identified four additional Guédry immigrants** to Louisiana prior to 1800. These were Marie-Françoise Boutin, Pierre-Olivier Boutin, Antoine Guédry and Olivier Guédry dit Canada. Recently, I located five additional Guédry immigrants to Louisiana. They are Marguerite Boutin, Joseph Guédry and Joseph Guédry's children Joseph, Simon and Magdeleine. The Updated Table below provides a chronological listing of all known Guédry immigrants to Louisiana prior to 1800.
* We have used the surname Guidry in the title since in Louisiana most paternal descendants of Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas use that surname; however, both Guedry and Gaidry are found in selected regions. The surname Guedry is found primarily in the St. Landry Parish and Terrebonne Parish areas while the surname Gaidry is found principally in the Terrebonne Parish and Lafayette Parish regions.
** The terms "Guédry families" and "Guédry immigrants" include persons who had either a parent or a grandparent with the surname Guédry. The immigrant, therefore, may not havehad the surname Guédry if their mother or grandmother was a Guédry.
ORIGINS OF THE GUIDRY FAMILY IN LOUISIANA, 1765 - 1800
The Acadian Deportations in 1755-1756 and 1758 as well as the imprisonment of Acadians at George's Island (Halifax), Fort Edward (Pisiguit) and Fort Cumberland (formerly Fort Beausejour near Beaubassin) scattered the Guédry family from western France to the English colonies along the Atlantic as well as the prisons of Nova Scotia. After the Treaty of Paris ended the Seven Years War in 1763, the Acadians began searching for a New Acadie. Louisiana with a large French population (although governed by Spain from 1762 to 1800) seemed destined to be their promised land - their New Acadie.
The 1764 arrival of a small group of Acadians from New York began a series of migrations of Acadians to Louisiana during the period 1764 to 1770 and in 1785. Arriving in February 1765 with the second group of Acadians to reach Louisiana, Joseph Guédry and Augustin Guédry were the first Guédry's to settle in Louisiana. Other Guédry families reached Louisiana in July 1767, February 1768, July 1785 and August 1785.
A total of 17 families, 3 single men and 4 orphans comprising 73 persons who had either a Guédry parent or grandparent settled in Louisiana during the period 1765 to 1800. In eleven families (with & ) the father of the family was a Guédry although one (Jean-Baptiste Guédry, husband of Anne Dupuis) died prior to his family arriving in Louisiana. In addition, three single Guédry men (with + ) arrived in Louisiana - later marrying and having families in Louisiana. Five of the Guedry men (with # ) also had their father (Claude Guédry or Charles Guédry) immigrate to Louisiana separately. Augustin Guédry (with @ ), husband of Théotiste Broussard, is not known to have had any children. The Guidry/Guedry/Gaidry surname in Louisiana, therefore, derives from seven Guédry men (with only & or + ) who immigrated to Louisiana and one Guédry whose widow (Anne Dupuis) arrived in Louisiana with her family- comprising seven grandsons and one great-grandson (Olivier Guédry dit Canada) of Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas. Each of these 73 persons descends from one of four children of Claude Guédry and Marguerite Petitpas - Augustin, Pierre, Paul or Françoise.
AN ASIDE
The Labine family of the Quebec region in Canada descends from one Guédry - Jean-Baptiste Augustin Guédry dit Labine dit Labrador, the son of Pierre Guédry dit Labine and Marguerite Brasseau. During his life Jean-Baptiste Augustin Guédry dit Labine had three wives - Claire Hélène Benoît, Marie-Marguerite Picot and Marie Angélique Marois. Olivier Guédry, son of Jean-Baptiste Augustin Guédry dit Labine and Marie-Marguerite Picot, emigrated from the Québec area to St. Martin Parish, Louisiana before 1793. Although his route to Louisiana is not known at present, he was a voyageur in Canada and may have paddled down the Mississippi River in a canoe or small boat. On 8 January 1793 he married Marie Félicite Aucoin in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. They raised a family of six boys and two girls.
Jean-Baptiste Guildry dit Labine, husband of Edwidge Senever dit Lemarbre, son of Jean-Baptiste Guildry dit Labine and Angélique Rivet and great-grandson of Jean-Baptiste Augustin Guédry dit Labine and Marguerite Picot, moved from the Québec area to Michigan in the 1840 and founded the LaBean family of Michigan.
The Jeddry and Geddry families of the St. Mary's Bay region of Nova Scotia and of New England descend from Augustin Guédry dit Grivois, husband of Marie-Françoise Jeanson and the son of Pierre Guédry dit Labine and Marguerite Brasseau. Augustin Guédry dit Grivois was the only Guédry not deported from Acadia.
The Guedry/Guidry families of southeast Texas descend from two sources. In the mid-1840's Ursin Guedry and his wife Matilda Foreman moved their family from St. Martin Parish, LA to the west bank of the Sabine River in today's Orange County, TX. In 1856 Ursin relocated his family near Sour Lake in Hardin Coutny, TX. Most Guedry's of Hardin County and Jefferson County descend from Ursin Guedry who was the son of Augustin Guédry and Scholastique Robichaud and the grandson of Pierre Guédry and Claire Babin. In the early 1900's Joseph Villere Guidry, the great-great-grandson of Olivier Guédry dit Canada and Marie Félicite Aucoin, immigrated to Orange County, TX from Lafayette Parish, LA.. He married Rosa Hollier in Orange, TX on 4 May 1905. Most Guidry's of Orange County, TX descend from Joseph Villere Guidry.
