Hundreds of thousands of Acadian descendants live in Canada, the United States, France and other parts of the world. Today many of these people search for their roots using the many tools available to today's genealogist.

All genealogical researchers should strive to use primary sources to the extent possible - especially those that occurred near the time of the event (e.g., birth, marriage, death, land sale) and were written by people witnessing the event (i.e., minister, parents, civil clerk). As the time of recording moves farther from the actual time of the event, the opportunity for error to enter the record increases as memories often fail and estimates are made (e.g., ages in censuses). Secondary sources (transcriptions, translations, written histories) suffer similarly from typographical errors and errors in fact.

Original church records are one of the best primary sources since they almost always were recorded immediately following the event by the priest or minister and often had witnesses to the event sign the document and provide family information as parent and grandparent names, location of their residence, etc.

Before their deportation, Acadians were almost exclusively Roman Catholic and the priests kept extensive records of the sacraments (e.g., baptisms, marriages, funerals) that they performed. There were many Acadian Catholic churches located throughout what is today mainland Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island and southern New Brunswick. Each region of communities had their own church as travel was difficult and slow; therefore, a church nearby was a necessity for the Acadian family. Where there were no churches, the Acadian priests made periodic missions to these outlying areas and recorded the sacraments performed in the register of the home parish.

Early members of the Guédry family benefited from the missions as they lived at Merliguèche along Acadia's south shore - isolated from the mainstream of Acadian life. On several occasions priests visited the south shore on missions, conducting mass and performing baptisms and marriages. Often the priests conducted blessings of earlier "civil" ceremonies that Acadian families conducted while awaiting a missionary priest. For example, an uncle, grandfather or other witness would baptize the newborn shortly after birth or a couple married in a "civil" ceremony witnessed by family and community members. The Acadians called the family baptism an "ondoyé". Often the priest included the "ondoyé" in the "official" baptismal record.

The horrific nature of the Acadian deportations that included burning of churches and homes resulted in most of the Acadian church records being destroyed or lost forever. A few, however, have survived and provide important primary source information for the Acadian researcher.

This article summarizes to the extent known the Acadian churches existing from 1613 to 1759, the location of the churches, the priests that served each church, what, if any, records survive today, the location of these records and the availability of transcriptions and translations of these records. It mentions briefly if any Guédry or Petitpas names occur in the various records. Prior to about 1780 there were only Guédry's - there were no Labine, LaBine, LaBean, Jeddry, Jedry, Geddry, Gedry, Guedry, Guidry, Gaidry, Gidry or other variations of the surname (unless it occurred as a misspelling in a record). In the early records there are several variations of the Petitpas surname as Petipas and Petit Pas.
