Minutes - Les Guidry d'Asteur Meeting -25 October 2011

October 25, 2011

Bonjour Cousins,

We had a very nice Reunion at Cut Off, LA on October 8th. There were many memorable highlights enjoyed by all. We began with a French Mass at 8 am celebrated by Peter Rogers and then moved to the Cut Off Youth Center where CajunMan himself Ron "Black" Guidry entertained us with his life as a youth growing up along a Louisiana bayou. He then played and sang several Cajun songs to the delight of all. Marty Guidry, dressed as an Acadian farmer, discussed the life of Pierre Guédry, son of Augustin Guédry and Jeanne Hébert, as he lived through hope after hope only to have each dashed by tragedy after tragedy during the period of deportation and resettlement in Louisiana. Everyone enjoyed a very tasty lunch of jambalaya, red beans and rice, white beans and rice, corn maque choux, salad, pralines and tarte à la bouille prepared by our own Roland Guidry, Wayne Simoneaux, Chuck Guidry and Ken Hutchinson. After lunch Nonc Jules Guidry and Mary Lou Guidry and their Cajun band Lachez-Lez with Roland Cheramie on fiddle and Elaine Clement on ti-fer entertained us with a rousing selection of Cajun two-steps and waltzes. Many took to the floor dancing the afternoon away. In 2011 our Board of Directors implemented the Les Guédry d'Asteur Circle of Distinction to recognize exceptional members of our family, both living and deceased, who have brought distinction and pride to our Guédry and Petitpas families. This year we inducted six outstanding members of our family into the Circle of Distinction including Daniel Charles 'Chuck' Guidry, Brigadier General Albert Louis Geddry, Diane Adair Gaidry, Sandra Pettipas Perro, Rita Labine and Ronald Ames Guidry. See the photo attached of Charlene Guidry Lacombe presenting Ronald Ames 'Ron' Guidry his Certificate. Annually we will induct up to six new members into the Circle of Distinction. Sandra Pettipas Perro presented a well-received discussion on the history of the Petitpas family in Acadia followed by photographs of historic Petitpas-related sites and recent Petitpas reunions. As the sun began to set along Bayou Lafourche, folks enjoyed gathering in small groups to meet their cousins and discuss their families. It was a memorable day for the almost 200 Guédry and Petitpas cousins that gathered along the bayou - coming from five Canadian provinces and a dozen U. S. states.

Later in the week many cousins joined for an adverture-filled Cajun Swamp Tour with "Black" Guidry on October 10th and an Historic Acadian Tour led by Marty Guidry on October 14th. Several also visited our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Information Table at the 2011 Grand Réveil Acadien Gala on October 13th.

Our newsletter edition Allie Guidry is already preparing a Reunion edition of "Generations" that we plan to publish in November. It will be loaded with photos of the Reunion as well as the family Swamp Tour, the Historic Acadian Tour and our Guédry-Labine & Petitpas Table at the Grand Réveil Acadien on October 13th. We'll also have the delicious recipes served at the Reunion as well as articles about the Reunion and the new inductees to the Les Guédry d'Asteur Circle of Distinction. Look for it soon.

Jim and Lynda Guidry of Guidry News Service (Houston, TX) attended the Reunion and recorded several of the events. Below is an audio of many segments of the Reunion as well as a brief slide slow. Just click on the link below.
