  2. WWI, WWII, Korean War & Vietnam War (With An Update on WWI) Current
  3. An Update

For generations a minority of American and Canadian men and women have joined our militaries to ensure the protection and freedoms for the majority of us. A relatively small number of those serving our countries have given their lives for the ideals of our nations. Depending on the sources of information, the numbers below vary slightly.

The official periods of each war are:
World War I
Canada: 4 Aug 1914 - 11 Nov 1918
U.S.: 6 Apr 1917 - 11 Nov 1918
World War I officially ended on 28 Jun 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles

World War II
Canada: 10 Sep 1939 - 15 Aug 1945
U.S.: 7 Dec 1941 - 2 Sep 1945
World War II officially ended on 20 Apr 1952 with the Treaty of San Francisco

Korean War
Canada: 15 Aug 1950 - 27 Jul 1953
U.S.: 27 Jun 1950 - 27 Jul 1953
Korean War has never ended, but an armistice was signed on 27 Jun 1953 that ended combat

Vietnam War Canada: Did not participate in war U.S.: 1 Nov 1955 - 30 Apr 1975
The Paris Peace Accords signed 27 Jan 1973 ended the Vietnam War and initiated a cease fire in Vietnam, but of the signatories only the U.S. honored the cease fire.

Approximately 620,000 Canadians served during World War I and 67,000 died from combat and non-combat causes (a 10.8% death rate of Canadians in WWI). At the outset of WWI, the Canadian population was 8,000,000; therefore, the Canadian military comprised 7.8% of the population.

Approximately 4,735,000 Americans served in World War I and 116,700 died from combat and non-combat related causes (a 1.3% death rate of Americans in WWI). The population of the United States at the start of WWI was 103,300,00; therefore, the American military represented 4.5% of the total population.

Canadian military strength during World War II was 1,100,000 of which 45,300 died from combat and non-combat-related causes (a 4.1% death rate of Canadians in WWII). At the start of WWII, the Canadian population was 11,300,000, thus those serving their nation in WWII represented 9.7% of the total Canadian population.

Approximately 16,113,000 Americans served in World War II and 405,400 died from combat and non-combat related causes (a 2.5% death rate of Americans in WWII). The American population at the start of WWII was 133,400,000, thus Americans serving in their military represented 12% of the total American population.

The Canadian military strength during the Korean War was 104,000 of which 26,700 Canadians served in theater. A total of 516 Canadians died from combat and non-combat related causes (a 0.5% death rate of among the total Canadian military and a 1.9% death in theater during the Korean War). At the start of the Korean War, the Canadian population was 13,807,000, thus those serving their nation in the Korean War represented 0.75% of the total Canadian population (in theater servicemen represented 0.19%).

The U.S. military strength during the Korean War was 5,720,000 of which 1,789,000 served in theater. Of the total military strength 54,246 military died from combat and non-combat related causes (a 0.95% death rate of Americans in the Korean War). Of the deaths 36,574 were in theater from combat and non-combat related causes (2.0% death rate in theater). The American population at the start of the Korean War was 151,326,000, thus Americans serving in their military represented 3.8% of the total American population (in theater servicemen represented 1.2%).

Canada did not officially participate in the Vietnam War ; however, it did contribute peacekeeping forces in 1973 to assist in enforcing the Paris Peace Accords. Some Canadian private companies provide war materiel to the U. S. government. Additionally, at least 30,000 Canadians volunteered to serve in the U.S armed forces during the Vietnam War with about 12,000 deployed in a combat role in theater. Of these 147 died or were reported missing in Vietnam representing 1.2% of the total Canadians serving in combat in theater. During the Vietnam War, the Canadian population was 21,435,000, thus Canadians serving in theater during the Vietnam War represented 0.06% of the total Canadian population.

The U.S. military strength during the Vietnam War was 8,744,000 of which 3,403,000 served in theater. Of the total military strength 90,220 military died from combat and non-combat related causes (a 1.0% death rate of Americans in the Vietnam War). Of the deaths 58,220 were in theater from combat and non-combat related causes (1.7% death rate in theater). The American population during the Vietnam War was 203,392,000, thus Americans serving in their military represented 4.3% of the total American population (in theater servicemen represented 1.7%).

November 11 th each year in Canada is Remembrance Day in which the country honors all those who serve and have served their nation's defense.

The United States Has Three Special Days Set Aside To Honor Those Who Serve In Its Military:
Armed Forces Day - Honoring Men And Women Currently Serving In The Military (3 rd Saturday Of May)
Memorial Day - Honoring Men & Women Who Have Died While Serving In The Military (Last Monday Of May)
Veterans Day - Honoring All Military Veterans (November 11 th )

Below are those in the Guédry and Petitpas families who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Korean War and Vietnam War with an update on some additional persons who died in World War I.

[Note that we have included any person serving in the military that died during the timeframe of the war regardless if they died from combat, disease or another reason. They were serving their nation at the time of their death.]
