Surviving Pre-Deportation Acadian Ecclesiastical Vital Records

At least three major factors greatly assist Acadians studying their genealogy and family history. Acadians prior to the deportation were Catholic and the Catholic Church in France and in Acadia kept detailed records of baptisms and marriages and often burials. The French (Acadia, Québec & Louisiana), British (Acadia & Maritime Provinces) and Spanish (Louisiana) enumerated their citizens in censuses regularly and kept records of life events. When deported, the Acadians were sent primarily to the Atlantic seaboard and Europe - both areas with established populations that kept detailed records.

Although at the time of the Acadian deportations the British burned the Acadian churches and destroyed the ecclesiastical (church) records of many churches, some of the records survived. According to Catholic Canon law, the ecclesiastical vital records belong to the parishioners of the church and not the Catholic Church or government. In at least one case, the parishioners of Saint-Charles-des-Mines Catholic Church at Grand-Pré took their records at the time of the deportation and kept them throughout the deportation period.
